“Artists As Innovators”

On Wednesday October 10th, 2018 myself along with a group of my fellow classmates went to the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery to view the current exhibition, “Artists As Innovators”.

Out of the many pieces featured there the one that stood out most to me was one titled Winnies Pooh. Created in 1993 by Ida Applebroog using materials such as oil and resin gel on a canvas base they presented an item that stuck me as creepy yet incredibly nostalgic. Raised as what many may say is the tale end of the millennial culture, nostalgia is an emotion that many of us can feel on a day to day basis. We’ve expirience the technological boom where we remember CD players just as well as MP3 players. Flip Phones to iPhones.

Applebroog’s piece, while sinister in meaning takes characters one can find in our beloved childhood stories, in this particular case Winnie the Pooh, and almost in a way, release the facade on what we thought life was meant to be. Linking back, memories themselves are nostalgia and sometimes this can hinder our progression in life. Some people are stuck in the past and try to hold dear to this place in time, a “mask” or excuse of why things of late were better. But things change and moving forward is the only path to succession.
