Special Topics – Sculpture (Personal)

Change is something that everyone will expirience whether they want to or not. It can string from personal events in your family or something you may stumble across via a website on the internet. It is something that will always be there until the world itself takes its last breath.

I wanted to do my best to incorporate the emotions we might feel in these occurrences as best as I could. While in the end some corners had to be cut I am still quite satisfied with the end product. One of the biggest and noticeable changes in life are the seasons, or even just the concept of life and death. I wanted to try and show that through the use of the flora elements wrapped around the sculpture. Starting from the right eye is a flower (Spring or birth) and as you follow the path it changes to a variation of leaves, antlers, mushrooms and other fungi, symbolizing the path all life takes towards decay and death.

The work prompt in itself was a change of pace as for the most part, we [students] are usually told under semi-strict guidelines what to make and what to expect. But for the purpose of this project we were able to choose our own outlook to explore layered time.

Materials used throughout the piece was a mixture of quite a few traditional elements. The main one being an aluminum foil and wire base to keep it light, and later topped with layers of air dry clay. Many of the fauna and flora elements were attached via hot glue. Once the base was considered completed it was painted over with white acrylic paint to hide any impurities in the natural coloration of the clay below.
